Accessibility is a museum standard

The current museum standard includes a number of assessment criteria on the accessibility of Dutch museums. A museum must ensure that its art collection and the information about that collection are and remain accessible to everyone. No fewer than 2.5 million Dutch adults have difficulty reading. The causes of these reading problems vary widely. People with reading difficulties or visual impairments, people with low literacy, people with dyslexia, people learning a new language and the growing group of older people all experience difficulties with reading. For this huge group of Dutch people, online information is poorly accessible or not accessible at all. An accessible art collection starts with an accessible website. The content of a website reaches a much larger audience when the text can be read aloud.

The aim

Museum MORE has a beautiful collection of modern realist art. The collection is part of the Dutch cultural heritage and should be accessible to everyone.

The solution

An accessible museum starts with its website. ReadSpeaker webReader reads online content aloud in several languages and can also translate it.

The benefit

With webReader, a website becomes accessible to every internet user, including people with learning difficulties or visual impairments, people with low literacy, people learning a new language, the ever-growing group of older people and anyone who prefers listening to reading. Anywhere and on any online device: one click and the page is read aloud.

Museum MORE and Kasteel Ruurlo are the first museum in the Netherlands to offer a text-to-speech tool on their websites. With it, the museum provides an extra service for people who have difficulty reading.

MORE is the most accessible

The website of Museum MORE is read aloud by webReader from ReadSpeaker. At the press of the listen button, the information on the page is converted into speech, while the text being read is highlighted to make it easier to follow along. Museum MORE fully complies with the museum standard on accessibility. Accessibility, and with it reach, is many times greater when a website offers a read-aloud option. All information about the museum and its collection (both in the museum and on the website) is accessible to everyone. That is how no museum is MORE accessible than Museum MORE.

With webReader from ReadSpeaker, every user can choose to listen instead of read. One click and online content is instantly converted into lifelike speech. With webReader, the content of websites becomes more accessible to people who have difficulty reading, but also to people who simply prefer to listen. ReadSpeaker webReader can be used anytime, anywhere and on any online device. The software is cloud-based and requires no unnecessary downloads.

The future: speechMaker audio tours

In addition to cloud-based text-to-speech software, ReadSpeaker also offers offline solutions. With ReadSpeaker speechMaker, audio files can be generated in more than 50 different languages. Museums can thus create their own audio tours in Chinese, English, Spanish and Arabic, among other languages. With the help of ReadSpeaker webReader and ReadSpeaker speechMaker, almost every visitor will be able to enjoy the information about the beautiful art collections the Netherlands has to offer.
