Assessments are intended to measure student progress in a specific area. To accomplish that, educators must remove barriers to engagement with the material, for example, those related to reading comprehension or reading skills (unless, of course, it’s a reading fluency assessment!). That way, you can be sure you’re assessing each student’s ability with regard to your learning objectives—not the student’s current level of focus.
Many students perform better when they hear assessment questions as opposed to reading them. Text-to-speech tools in particular provide an important read-aloud accommodation.
